What happens after Ghostifier sends your request
Some companies will email you directly. Here's what each kind of email means and what to do.
When Ghostifier sends an opt-out or deletion request, it goes to the company's privacy team with your signed permission attached. Many companies handle it quietly. Others write back to you directly, even though the request came from us. That's normal. A reply means a real person or system has picked up your request.
Most replies fall into one of four kinds.
1. "We got it, and we're working on it"
The company confirms it received your request. Some give a request or ticket number and a timeframe, often up to 30 or 45 days. Later you may get a second email saying the work is done.
What to do: Nothing. Keep the email if you like, since some companies delete their own record of your request once they finish.
2. "Reply to confirm"
The company wants to hear from you that Ghostifier is acting for you, or that you really want your data deleted. Some ask a follow-up question, such as which of two accounts to remove.
What to do: Reply to that email in a sentence or two. For example: "I confirm Ghostifier is acting as my authorized agent. Please go ahead with my request." You don't need to send any documents unless you want to.
3. "Click to verify"
The company uses a privacy platform (such as OneTrust, Ketch or DataGrail) that sends you a link to confirm your email address or identity.
What to do: Open it soon. These links often expire in 5 to 7 days, and if you miss the window the request is cancelled and has to be sent again. Before you click, check that the email is from the company or its privacy platform and mentions your request.
4. "We need you to do it yourself"
Some companies only delete an account when the account holder does it, usually from the account settings page. Some send a link to their own request form instead. Others tell you how to unsubscribe or change ad settings yourself.
What to do: If you want the account gone, log in and delete it from the settings. If you'd rather keep it, you can ignore the email.
Other replies you might see
- "We couldn't find you." The company searched and has no data tied to your email. That's a good result.
- "We've stopped the marketing, but..." Some companies remove you from emails but explain they can't connect other data, like ad cookies, to your email.
- "This isn't the right address." Occasionally a request reaches someone who can't act on it. Ghostifier tracks these so the request can be sent to the right place.
How long it takes
Most replies arrive within a few days. Companies covered by state privacy laws usually have up to 45 days to finish. Ghostifier tracks each request to its deadline where one applies.
Staying safe
A real privacy team will never ask for your password or full card number. If an email asks for those, or the sender doesn't match the company, don't click or reply. Ghostifier will never ask you to confirm a request by email; anything you need to act on shows up in your account.
